QUIKIE COLORADO VISIT

Last weekend, we made a quick trip to see Michael & Sara and their new home in Arvada. We arrived late Thursday evening, and Sara was suffering with bad ear pain, so after hugs, everyone went directly to bed. In the morning she went to the doctor who said she had a severe ear infection. That afternoon, she went to bed (with the aid of three medications), and Michael took us out for adventures.
First, we went to the Red Rocks Amphitheater, a gorgeous rock structure near Denver where open-air concerts are given. Huge red rock outcroppings surround three sides of the stage, providing a perfect acoustical setting for the concerts. Many people were exercising in the seating area - walking/running/jumping/climbing/etc in the many levels of the seating area. Going across each row from the top to the bottom is equivalent to a 5K. It was fascinated to see all the interesting ways that people were exercising. I (Nancy) walked on the side aisle from top to bottom twice, and just that was a challenge for my Kansas lungs. I would LOVE to be able to exercise there on a regular basis – much more interesting than the walking route I do at home! I could have spent more time here, soaking in the beauty of the rocks and the day, but Michael’s attention span necessitated moving on!
Next, we took a winding drive up to the gravesite of Buffalo Bill Cody, on Lookout Mountain near Golden. A popular place to bike, we passed many bikers trudging their way to the top. From the top is a magnificent view of Denver! Michael gave non-stop commentary about his many great bicycling adventures. There’s no doubt about what he loves to do!
The evening’s activities included relaxing on the deck, a steak dinner, purchasing a mattress and box springs for their guest room (that’s a story in itself!!), and sitting by a chiminea fire.
On Saturday, we toured the Coors Brewery and had lunch in Golden. Golden would be a great town to live in – approximately the same size as Newton, but with many fun shops, restaurants, and of course, always the beautiful mountains in the background. It could be a great place to retire….!? Since it was St. Patrick’s Day, Sara planned our day to include the Irish traditions of “car bombs”, corned beef, cabbage and red potatoes, and topped off with an Irish movie.
Michael and Sara are so happy to be in their own home, and have their own yard. With the nice temps, Michael spent every free moment outside raking, digging, moving timbers, and watering. They want to have a garden and have some nice areas for that. While out in the yard, we met one of their neighbors, named “Tempe” (like in Arizona), who after meeting them and finding out they had no children, told them to get busy with that! I'm sure she'll be a quirky, interesting neighbor! It was so awesome to hang out with Michael and Sara for the weekend. Always a good time!

FUNKS HIBRID ARMS???

man oh man do i wish my baby-girl was here to
help me edit these pictures...they turned out
so dark and i don't know how to lighten them up
so you can see the detail.

Anyhow... this is my latest creation, a .223 Winchester toy rifle, all made of wood! I found
a couple of old crappy pieces of walnut in my
shed out back, and it came to be. Don't have any idea what else I could do with that stuff, so I sanded it smooth, found a couple of areas big enough for a gunstock, got my real rifle out, and traced the pattern on both. Gluing them together, cutting them to size, a bit of time on my newly-returned disk/belt sander, and there you go! I went up to the hardware store and got a brass slide bolt for the "action" on the rifle, as well as some dowels for the barrel and magazine.

A lot of rough sanding, a bunch of final sanding, and many coats of sealer & gloss varnish later, and I think I have a pretty nice toy rifle. Maybe I can shoot some lighter shots later that will show the gun better...we'll see. Now Sutton will have something really nice to play with when he gets older.

I haven't decided if I should add a scope or not...what do y'all think?

FANTASTIC PIZZA

Haven't done any blog posts on food lately...here's one finally!

Made an awesome pizza tonite...started with our usual pizza dough recipe, using some whole wheat flour. While that was rising I browned a whole pkg of brats with a generous teaspoon of minced garlic. Then I chopped 4 oz smoked ham, a fresh Roma tomato, 1/2 a large onion. I patted the dough onto a large pizza pan that I greased and sprinkled liberally with cornmeal. Here's the SECRET...I put about 2 TBSP of prepared mustard on my 1/2 of the pie, then the usual sauce. Next came the browned brats & ham, tomato, onion, 2 cans mushrooms, 1 can black olives (on my half), and finally mozarella cheese.

Baked at 410 degrees for 8 minutes, turned, and baked for 6 minutes more...Vunderbaa! Deliciouso magnific! I figured that what I put on my brat when I eat it traditionaly would be good on a pizza...mustard & onion, so there you go.

2 magnificient meals this weekend...I marinated a flat iron steak Friday nite for 24 hours in the Funk Family Steak marinade, and grilled it Saturday nite about 18 minutes to a nice medium/medium rare, then sliced it thin. Wow, was it tender and the beef flavor really came thru...was better than the ribeyes I've been grilling, and with NO fat!

Hint: listen to "Leaving Eden" by Brandon Heath sometime...its a good one!

Weekend Company

It was almost nice enuf to be outside this morning w/o a coat...almost. We didn't have anything in size 20 months, so Mom scrounged up this Nike pullover for the Sutton-man to wear...it was hilarious watching him piddle around the yeard!

Sutton says" does this make my butt look big?" Not really ;-)

We had the pleasure of hosting our daughter, grandson, and grand-dogs Saturday and Sunday, had a great time. Fixed a wonderful turkey/mashed potatoes/green peas/homemade roll dinner last nite...everyone feasted, even Sutton(the peas were his favorite). The dogs slept in the man-cave for night and did real well, Gina & Sutton had the downstairs suite. After a delicious breakfast of pancakes, it was outside and off to watch the dog-races! Everyone was beat by 10am, so Gina packed up the clan and headed home.

I then got to have leftover turkey, got in a short scooter ride, and still managed to get in 2 lathe projects and a wood box project over the weekend. That was a busy enuf weekend for me!
